Director of Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Japan, Taka Watanabe talks tsunamis: “The waves were huge, strong and continuous”

Japanese cities were destroyed, last Friday, by a series of earthquakes and tsunamis, and the number of victims doesn’t stop enlarging. According to the local TV channel, it’s bigger than 10 thousand. Facing a catastrophe, we’ve got in touch with the Brazilian Takamasa Watanabe, director of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Japan (JJFJ), who has spoken about the tragedy. “What have caused the largest amount of deaths wasn’t the earthquake itself, but the tsunami that’s attacked Japan’s coast. The waves were huge, strong and continuous. Over 90 thousand villages have completely disappeared”, tells the Brazilian, Who currently lives in Tokyo, in Japan, where he leads one of Axis’ branch. Check below the complete interview with the black belt:

How are things in Japan after the earthquakes?

The most affected area was the northeast states of Japan. Since they have experience in great earthquakes, the buildings and houses in Japan are built with structures that handle strong earthquakes. But what has caused the largest amount of deaths wasn’t the earthquake itself, but the tsunami that’s attacked Japan’s coast.

The waves were huge, strong and continuous. Over 90 thousand villages have completely disappeared. The number of deaths wasn’t bigger only and exclusively because after the earthquake the people who live in the coast went to the highest places of their cities. Making things worse, the waves affected a greater area than predicted, causing a catastrophe.

Was the city you live in attacked by the tsunamis and earthquakes?

My main gym is in Tokyo. I live here for 18 years now and this was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever seen. But there were no great damages here in Tokyo.

Do you have any news of victims among your students and coaches?

No, not so far. There’re gyms located near Chiba’s coast, where people were obligated to evacuate just for precaution.

Did the authorities give you anything about when things will come back to normal?

No. They did exactly the opposite. The authorities ask us to stay alert, because there’s a possibility that another great earthquake affects the area within the next month.

Feel free to send a message for your relatives and friends…
